This graphic compares state-spending for certain key areas, such as higher ed. Medicaid etc. I admire the design of this graphic because it allows users to interact with the image in several ways. First, the colored bars following a spending item are more or less proportional to states’ actual spending. Second, bars light up to identify a state you’ve searched for, so the user can observe where the state’s spending ranks relative to others for each area. Lastly, the bars themselves are interactive – a user can click on a bar and toggle a state. Try using the graphic to see what I mean.
